What's the best way to Timelapse a sunrise/sunset?
Sunrise and sunset are undoubtedly one of the most spectacular sights. To shoot these natural phenomena, you need to have everything right. Here are some tips from our in-house time-lapse experts
to get you started:
Shooting Tips
- If you want to capture perfect timelapse, you need to plan. It saves you a lot of hassle. Plan everything in advance so you are prepared with the right equipment and travel gear.
- Choose a location from where you would be filming the sunset/sunrise. Ideally, the location should be free of any distractions like tourists, bushes, buildings, etc.
- Go to your chosen location at least an hour before sunrise/sunset. This will give you some extra time to set up the camera and scout the location for the right spot.
- Once you have chosen your spot, walk around and take some test shots to get an idea about how the lighting conditions behave.
- Avoid using the automatic mode of your camera as much as you can. Use manual mode instead to get consistent pictures. It also means that you have to be constantly alert but it’s all worth it in the end.
- While shooting sunrises or sunsets you would generally want to use a low to mid-range ISO setting like 200, 400, or 800.
- Use an intervalometer to set an interval of 5-10 seconds to get a smooth time-lapse.
- Make use of the rule of thirds, leading lines, and interesting focal points to tell your story.
Processing Tips
- Capturing sunset or a sunrise means a noticeable flicker in the time-lapse footage. This means you need to remove it during the processing stage. Although it might seem like a daunting task with little practice and patience you can easily smooth out these flickers. The best way to do so is using Lightroom and LRTimelapse
- Once you have removed the flicker, import the images in a sequence, create your composition and add any effects you want. Save your time-lapse.
And that’s it, you are done!
